Net Zero with Photovoltaics on Georgian Bay Residence

(Image Left) Designed for four generations of the same family to enjoy this residence on the south shore of Georgian Bay sets high standards.  A full compliment of sustainable technologies and practices sets this project apart from others in the Blue Mountain region and the unique building form and functional program promise to provide a wonderful family retreat as well as a year round residence for its owners.

Pond-Loop Geothermal Powers Residence in Claremont, Ontario.

(Image Centre) House recently featured in the Toronto Star. This home is sited on an amazing property that offered both the intimacy of a classic English landscape as well as expansive panoramic views over rolling, rural fields towards Lake Ontario. The goal of the design was to embrace the immediate intimacy of the site while revealing, through the architecture, the extensive views offered from various vantage points within the home. The exposed heavy timber Douglas Fir structure hugs the landscape allowing large expanses of glass to bring the surroundings inside while providing dramatic moments when the endless view exposes itself.

New miniHome line of Green, Prefab Architecture

(Image Right) Since Altius Architecture acquired 45% of Sustain Design Studio in the Spring of 2007, Sustain has worked in collaboration with Altius on a completely new line of miniHomes called the ‘12WIDE’. The 6 basic modules can be configured into dozens of different floorplans to suit cleint’s sites and budgets. The cost of construction is on the order of $220/sf - and provides a lower cost (because smaller) alternative to custom green architecture. Sustain is currently working with a number of Park Developers in Canada to offer the first miniHome residential parks in 2009. Sustain has also recently announced the 4×5 metre ‘Rapid Room’ - an instant addition for housing stock in London, UK.

The miniHome has recently been published in Dwell Magazine and featured at the Philadelphia Prefab Exhibition titled ‘A Clean Break’ which wrapped up October 25th.
