Big Sound Cottage

360° views

Perched high up on a rocky outcrop, this residence takes advantage of expansive views over Georgian Bay as well as intimate views back into the forest. The double-height interior in the living spaces seamlessly extends to the exterior living spaces through large siding doors. The exterior living spaces directly connect to the exposed granite and is sheltered from the sun by a slatted wooden canopy. Deep roof overhangs and the intermediate wood canopy protect the double-height glazing from summer solar gain while allowing the winter sun to penetrate the building and warm the concrete floors. The long master bedroom wing is intimate in scale and opens to the adjacent forest. A flexible loft space above the kitchen opens to a deck where a green roof on top of the bedroom allows for views from the loft to melt into the forest beyond. In-floor radiant heating provides even heat distribution in the winter months and during the summer months, the building is designed to cool and ventilate itself naturally.
