Summerhill House

DESIGN

This century old family home in midtown Toronto was in desperate need of a renovation with a leaking rear addition when the clients approached Altius. The new two storey addition is bright, open and tailored to suit the specific needs of the family.

The second floor of the new addition introduces a master suite, with two sided walk-in closet, private bathroom and a bedroom with backyard views. On the main floor, a second staircase allows the outdoor enthusiasts to easily bring gear downstairs to a large new basement storage space. The major alterations involves connecting and expanding the existing kitchen and dining room to include a new family room that spans the width of the home and has direct access to the backyard. The majority of the main floor becomes an open concept space for cooking, eating, doing homework, and hanging out, that opens directly onto a back deck.

The existing exterior shell will be updated economically with fresh paint and brick repointing. Insulating from the interior allows the retention of brick on the exterior, while improving thermal performance of the existing walls. An updated colour scheme and new windows throughout will tie it aesthetically to the rear addition.
