Heart’s Content Cottage

This island retreat near Pointe-au-Baril celebrates the simplicity of the local vernacular. The small, simple box with a pitched roof is transformed into an elegant glass pavilion for its owners to enjoy the wondrous landscape that surrounds them.

With this project, the focus was on materials at harmony with the Georgian Bay terrain, such as Douglas fir post and beam construction, with piles that sit lightly on the landscape. Fibreglass windows, pre-finished pine siding, Ipé decking, a slate and concrete block fireplace, and corrugated steel roofing also added to the simple natural look and harmonious colour palette.

The transparency of the breezy cottage is an attempt to bring the outdoors inside, giving unparalleled views of the surrounding rock, trees, and lake.
