Kasshabog Lake Cottage

Peterborough County, ON, Canada

Peterborough area cottage with large stone patio and firepit

The 1,600 square foot cottage takes advantage of the existing cottage’s beautiful vista over the lake, with a simple and long addition oriented to the view. A wood and stone material palette and exposed wood beams compliment the stony and conifer tree surrounding scenery. The colours and materials of the building shell are sympathetic to the landscape, as well as to the shell of the existing cottage, and make the view in just almost as great as the view out.

The owners of this cottage wanted to maintain and renovate the original cabin, adding on to create space for their growing family. A new wing was added behind the cabin, stretching along the length of the hill to connect with the landscape and take full advantage of the view to the lake.

The new addition provided a new master bedroom suite, and a large living room, dining room and kitchen, all with large windows and sliding doors to maximize the view and airflow through the cottage. Back to back fireplaces create the division between the living and dining rooms: a large Rumford fireplace creates ambiance in the living room while a tempcast masonry heater with pizza oven warms the dining room side in the winter months.

The exterior was finished in wood siding and stone selected to match the stone around the property. The interiors use natural douglas fir on the walls and ceilings, with dark slate tile on the floors for durability. Custom millwork provides functional storage spaces throughout while lighting adds to the character of each space. The cottage is warm and inviting, providing ample space for family gatherings.
